Learn more about Sagrada Família

Being in Barcelona means you have to visit Basilica de la Sagrada Familia! This unique and certainly familiar building is one of the most famous landmarks in Spain. Every year, the Sagrada Família opens its door to over 5 million visitors visiting the location.

Before we travel back, you might wonder what Sagrada Família is. Well, it is a massive and unfinished church designed by the great Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. Considered to be the largest unfinished Catholic Church in the world, this work of art is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Sagrada Familia began its construction in 1882 under the leadership of architect Franciso de Paula del Villar. However, things changed in 1883 as Antoni Gaudi took over as chief architect. He transformed the project by blending in both Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau styles. Architect Antoni Gaudí dedicated his life to the project, and in 1926, he passed away. His remains were buried in the crypt of the church. At the time of his death, less than a quarter of the project had been completed.

Following the death of Antoni Gaudí, Domenec Surganes (Gaudi's closet assistant) took over the project. Throughout this time, Surganes oversaw the completion of the 3 remaining bell towers and its Faith portico. However, after the passing of Surganes, the building faced an even greater obstacle.

The basilica is expected to be completed in 2026 during the 100th anniversary of Gaudi's death. But the question remained… Will it finish on time?
