Learn more about Lyon–Saint-Exupéry Airport

Lyon-Saint Exupery Airport is a major international airport located in France's second city, Lyon. The airport was named after Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, from Lyon and one of the country’s most beloved writers (his most famous work, Le Petit Prince, is known all around the world) who was also fascinated with aviation; he tragically died while serving as a pilot during World War Two. The airport was opened in 1975 and has undergone several renovations and expansions over the years. Today, it is the fourth-busiest airport in France, with over 12 million passengers in 2019, and serves as a hub for several airlines including Air France, and EasyJet. It’s situated around twenty kilometers southwest of the city center, and is easily reached from the city; a half-hour ride on the Rhônexpress takes you to the Lyon-Part-Dieu Business District in the center of town. It’s an airport that’s making great strides in environmentalism; the car park roof comprises over 7,000 m² of solar paneling which provides power to many features of the airport, while also planning a large hydrogen gas facility to power some heavy machinery, all as part of an aim to have zero net emissions within the airport perimeter by 2026. The airport is known for being on the cutting edge; it was the first airport in France to introduce the self-service check-in concept, back in the 1990s. The airport has also been a pioneer in adopting the best new technologies, such as the use of biometrics for passenger identification and boarding.
