Situated in the center of the 10th arrondissement, The Gare de l'Est officially goes by the name, Paris-Est. Today, the station opens its door to over 37 million travelers annually, making it on the list of one of the city's busiest train stations. Like Paris Gare du Nord, the train station houses lines heading to international destinations such as Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Germany. However, the terminal also serves trains running to France's Grand Est region (Reims, Nancy, Metz, Strasbourg). And between March and November, the station hosts the weekly Venice Simplon Orient Express: a vintage railcar that allows you to experience an opulent and romantic atmosphere while traveling from Paris to the city of Venice.
Before the station was owned by SNCF, it was under the ownership of a private company named Compagnie du Chemin de Fer de Paris à Strasbourg (Paris-Strasbourg Railway Company). When the station opened in 1849, it was known under the name "Embarcadère de Strasbourg" or, in English, Strasbourg platform. And in 1850, Président Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte (the future Napoleon III) launched the station. 4 years later, the train station changed its name to Gare de l'Est after its expansion to Mulhouse.
Today, the station is the oldest Parisian station, and like most train stations in the city of Paris, the terminal continues to evolve and live its legacy.
