Learn more about Paris Gare De Lyon

Gare de Lyon is one of the train stations you might pass through while traveling around the city of Paris. In 1849 when the station opened its door to the public, it was known under the name "Railway station from Paris to Montereau" (or in French, Embarcadère de chemin de fer de Paris à Montereau). However, in 1855, the terminal changed its name to Gare de Lyon, inspired by the French city Lyon. So why Lyon, out of all the cities in France? That's because the city was a central terminus for most trains traveling from the Gare de Lyon. However, before the Parisian train station became the beautiful station it is today, it went through a horrific tragedy: it was burned down during the Paris commune (Commune de Paris in French) in 1871 and was later reconstructed identically. 29 years later, Gare de Lyon underwent a massive transformation for the Exposition Universelle of 1900, designed by well-known French architect Marius Toudoire. A fantastic facade was added to the building with a high-tower clock that you can see today from outside the station. The tower clock at Gare de Lyon may resemble Big Ben in London, but that's completely normal because the tower clock is a typical example of the architectural design of that era. Today, Gare de Lyon is one of Paris's largest railway stations. Every year the station opens its door to an average of 110 million travelers from around the world, making it the second busiest station in France, right after Gare du Nord. The station is home to TGV trains heading to the southern and eastern parts of France and not to forget international destinations such as Switzerland, Spain, Italy, and Germany. So if your next adventure is at any of the above locations, you'll likely depart from Gare de Lyon. Besides serving long journeys inside and outside the country, the station also houses public transportation around the region, like Transilien and RER trains and metros. Though Gare de Lyon may seem impressive from the outside, you'll easily find your way inside. There are two halls with 32 platforms inside: Hall 1, with tracks labeled with letters from A to N, and Hall 2, designed in a more modern style, has platforms labeled with numbers from 5 to 23.
