Learn more about Louvre Museum

The Louvre museum, located at the end of the Tuileries Garden in the first arrondisement is, quite simply, the most famous museum in the world. It’s iconic glass pyramid entrance rises out of the ground, creating a profound contrast with the ornate old buildings of the Palais du Louvre. The Palais du Louvre was constructed in the 12th and 13th centuries as a fortress, but by the 16th century, the threat of invasion had diminished and it became a Palace for French royalty. When the Sun God, Louis XIV moved the royal residence to Versailles, the Louvre palace became a place to show off the royal collection of art and sculpture. After the French Revolution, in 1793, this collection became a public museum and gallery. The collection of paintings, drawings, artefacts, sculpture has increased massively since then; now over 380,000 objects and 35,000 works of art are housed in the museum, all housed in an enormous complex of over 60,600 square metres. It is the most visited museum in the world, with a record 10.2 million visitors in 2018. Numbers haven’t quite hit that peak since the pandemic, but be prepared for a huge crowd regardless!
