Of all the famous ancient buildings in Rome, there’s a good argument for the Pantheon to be the most spectacular. The Pantheon was built by Emperor Hadrian around 125 AD, on the site of an earlier temple built by Marcus Agrippa (hence the inscription on the facade, which remains from the original temple, bearing Agrippa’s name) and has been in continuous use since then. Originally a temple to Roman Gods, it became a Christian Church in 609 AD after it was consecrated by Pope Boniface IV. Thus, it has continued to be maintained with the help of Church funds. For this reason, it is still the largest unsupported concrete dome in the world, almost 2000 years after its construction! When you visit this amazing, enormous ancient building, you’re stepping into an amazing Ancient Roman building and an incredibly ancient early Christian Church.
