Learn more about Notre Dame

We've all heard of the famous Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral from the novel Hunchback of Notre-Dame, written by French writer Victor Hugo. Well, this work of art mentioned in Victor Hugo's novel is located on Île de la Cité in the 4th arrondissement, and it is one of the sites you need to visit while in Paris. Being referred to as Notre-Dame (Meaning "Our Lady of Paris" in English), this cathedral is today one of France's oldest and most prominent landmarks. With over centuries of history, Notre-Dame has seen it all. From the coronation of Napoleon the first in 1804 to the liberation of Paris in 1944.

The cathedral started construction in the 12th century and took about 300 years to complete. King Louis VII (ruler from 1120-1180) commissioned this medieval Catholic cathedral with the intention of making this cathedral as a symbol of Parisian supremacy. Due to His Majesty's favor for French Gothic architecture, the construction of Notre-Dame de Paris adopted the French Gothic style. Though, for the most part, the cathedral represents a French Gothic approach, you can still find some spots in the building revealing the Renaissance and the Naturalism era of construction.

Today, the cathedral's fame extends beyond the borders of the country. Visitors from all over the world come to admire the stained glass windows, the statues, and the holy relics. Unfortunately, with the dramatic fires that took place in 2019, visits were interrupted. The cathedral is being rebuilt and scheduled to open in 2024 for the summer Olympic Games.
